Aligarh curfew continues

Two-member committee begins investigation

Aligarh: Curfew imposed in parts of Aligarh after Thursday's communal flare-up continued for the sixth day on Tuesday, even as the authorities relaxed curfew for two hours in two out of the five police station areas in the evening.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in Delhi Gate, Sasni Gate, Gandhi Park, Banna Devi and Kotwali police station areas last Thursday after group clash and police firing in which eight people were killed and 16 injured.

No relaxation

The district authorities on Tuesday relaxed curfew from 3 pm to 5pm in Gandhi Park and Banna Devi police station areas.

However, no relaxation was allowed in Delhi Gate, Sasni Gate and Kotwali police station areas and a decision about the relaxation in these areas would be taken on Wednesday.

In Lucknow, State Principal Secretary (Home) S. K. Agarwal claimed the situation was fast returning normal to normal.

He said except at two mosques, namaz (prayers) were held just like the normal days. No prayers were held at the Shishawali and Darzia mosques as per a consensus arrived at between the administration and the clerics.

Entry banned

Keeping in mind the sensitive situation, the district administration has banned the entry of political leaders into Aligarh.

Meanwhile, the two-member high-level committee, comprising Principal Secretary Agriculture Arun Kumar Mishra and DG Police Headquarters S. K. Rizvi, set up to probe the outbreak of communal violence has started its investigation. It has been asked to submit its report by Saturday next.

At least 200 people had so far been arrested in connection with the communal flare up, while a compensation of Rs five lakh each has been announced to the kin of the deceased by the State Government. An additional compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh was announced by the Centre as well. UNI
