"Scrap cess on marketable produce"

Staff Reporter

"No link between regulated marketing centres and actual market"

SATTUR: The Sattur Chamber of Commerce and Industries has called upon political parties aspiring for votes to give an assurance to scrap the cess levied on traders as there was no justification in its levy.

In a press release, the general secretary of the chamber, P.T.K.A. Balasubramanian, said the duty of regulated marketing centres was to ensure development of land for farmers, provision of quality seeds, proper irrigation, agricultural loans, distribution of fertilizers according to the nature of the soil and safe warehousing. There was no link between regulated marketing centres and the actual market. Hence cess should not be levied on marketable produce.

The other demands of the chamber include revival of traders' welfare board, operation of private buses on routes not served by the government transport system, construction of check-dams to improve groundwater level and cultivation of bio-diesel plants such as jatropa.
