Karaikudi : Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa and MDMK chief Vaiko should clearly spell out their stand on Sethusamudram project and Tamil Ealem issue. Participating in a Democratic Progressive Alliance workers' meeting at Devakottai near here on Tuesday to campaign for K.R. Ramasamy, candidate for Thiruvadanai, he branded the AIADMK-MDMK alliance as strange, not based on principles. Mr. Chidambaram said while Mr. Vaiko was a staunch supporter of Sethusamudram project and Tamil Ealem issue, Ms. Jayalalithaa was opposing the very two issues. "In fact, she created obstacles to stop the Sethusamudram project. Hence, people of southern districts should teach a lesson to their alliance in the Assembly elections." All sections of people, including government staff, teachers, farmers etc. suffered in the AIADMK Government. But within a short time, the Central Government solved the problem of State Bank of India employees when they boycotted office, the Minister said. Not even a single employee was suspended for having participated in the agitation. But, the State Government dismissed lakhs of employees when they agitated against the State Government a couple of years ago. They got back their jobs only after the intervention of the Supreme Court, Mr. Chidambaram said. Mr. Chidambaram said, "Ms. Jayalalithaa stalled Nanguneri Special Economic Zone project just because it was mooted by the former Minister Murasoli Maran." Earlier, in an informal chat with reporters here, Mr. Chidambaram said the DPA would highlight the achievements of the Central Government and the contribution of the 13 Central Ministers from Tamil Nadu to the development of the state. The achievements, including implementation of the Sethusamudram project, tsunami relief and education loans to youths would be taken to the people. On the possibility of fulfilling the DMK chief M. Karunanidhi's promise of colour television sets to the people, Mr. Chidambaram said the DMK chief had once again reiterated his commitment.
