MYSORE: Residents of Vidyaranyapuram blocked traffic on Tuesday in protest against water shortage.

Hundreds of protesters, including women and children, blocked the traffic near National Institute of Engineering early in the morning demanding restoration of water supply to the area. They said that water had not been supplied to the area for the past 15 days.

It is learnt that the distribution of water has been affected on three main roads in Vidyaranyapuram area.

The protesters mobbed assistant executive engineer Vishwanath and assistant engineer Balakrishna when they arrived at the spot to pacify the protesters.

Opening of valves

They informed the residents that the water supply could not be restored as residents near Mysore Silk Factory were opposing the opening of the valves, as it would affect water supply to their area. Confessing that they were unable to open the valves to restore water supply, the engineers said that the water lines should also be connected to the borewells sunk in the area.

Residents' demand

Even while they pleaded with the residents to allow them to go back to their offices to rectify the mistake, the angry residents demanded restoration of water supply immediately.

Tanker supply

Their efforts to contact Mysore City Corporation Commissioner, Chandrashekar and Mayor Bharathi went futile.

Meanwhile, the officials succeeded in getting tankers to supply water to the affected areas. Calm prevailed after residents withdrew their protest to collect water from the tankers.
