He calls himself Independent `Congress' candidate

V. Narayanan will contest from Mylapore

Chennai : `Americai' V. Narayanan, who quit the Congress is contesting as an Independent from the Mylapore constituency.

He told newspersons on Tuesday that if elected, he would be the voice of autorickshaw drivers in the Assembly.

The founder of INODA, an organisation working for autorickshaw drivers, launched his campaign to cover all of Mylapore's 1,235 streets.

Mr. Narayanan calls himself the Independent `Congress' candidate.

Asked why he called himself a Congressman after leaving the party, he said one who did good for the people, served them, followed the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, was a Congressman. He said he will attempt to cash in on the non-aligned and intellectual voters of Mylapore.

As an MLA, Mr. Narayanan said that, if elected, he would work for the allocation of MLA funds through participative processes, work with NGO's, and use his professional background in finance, agriculture and IT to contribute effectively.

`People's politics'

B.S. Raghavan, former civil servant, said the time had come to move away from party politics towards people's politics.

V. Karuppan, former IAS official, and writer Charukesi spoke in support of Mr. Narayanan.
