Quota for OBCs in IIMs, IITs opposed

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Members of the OC Welfare Association here on Tuesday demanded that Government withdraw the move to introduce 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

At a press conference, president of the association G. Karunakar Reddy said it was unfair on the part of Government to continue providing reservation to sections of society on the ground that they were under-privileged.

He said that if the present move went through, it would mean crossing the 50 per cent ceiling on reservations stipulated by the Supreme Court.

He said that if the proposals to move a bill in Parliament were not withdrawn, it would lead to social conflict. It would also lead to history repeating itself, he said. If certain sections required some help, the association was certainly for it. But it did not mean making special reservations for them, he said.
