NEW DELHI: A 37-year-old Delhi Police constable was killed when the motorcycle he was riding was knocked down by a Maruti Esteem car driven by a bank executive at Hauz Khas in South Delhi shortly after midnight on Monday. According to the police, Constable Namdev, posted at the Pul Prahladpur police post in Sangam Vihar, was going on his motorcycle on some official work when a Maruti Esteem hit him from behind on Outer Ring Road, opposite S-Block Panchsheel Park, around 2 a.m. Namdev's motorcycle fell on the ground and his body was dragged by the Esteem car for about 50 metres. Some passers by gathered at the spot and informed the police. The person who was driving the car, Gagan Thukral, is a 24-year-old executive employed with the Citibank and a resident of IIT campus. He was taken into police custody. A medical examination revealed that Gagan had consumed liquor. The police said he was driving at great speed. A senior police officer said Gagan had gone to attend a party in Greater Kailash and was returning home. He admitted to having consumed liquor at the party. The constable, a native of Maharashtra, was going from Chirag Dilli flyover towards IIT gate when the accident occurred. Hauz Khas police have registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving and are investigating further.
