dated April 13, 1956: "One mother will do"

Prime Minister Nehru told a public meeting at Sirsi on April 11: "Often I heard shouts of `Jai Karnataka Mata' after `Bharat Mataki Jai.' What is this new Mata (Mother)? Is not one Mata, Mother India, sufficient? Do you want to have many mothers and all the confusion and bitterness in the house which goes with that?" he asked amidst laughter and then remarked, "More mothers will mean more families, each claiming to be a separate entity. We have had enough trouble with demands for separate States and separate treatment. So let us all have one mother."
