Raichur: Members of the Raichur district unit of the Samajwadi Party staged a dharna here on Wednesday in protest against the inaction of the Union and State Governments in solving the problems faced by farmers, anganwadi workers and unemployed youths in the State. About 50 activists led by S.G. Math, general secretary of the State unit of the party, took out a procession in the city before staging the dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Headquarter Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner urging the Governor to direct the Government to initiate action to solve the problems faced by farmers, unemployed youths and anganwadi workers. In the memorandum, they demanded that the State Government provide free electricity to irrigation pumpsets with an installed capacity of up to 10 hp, enhance wages for anganwadi workers and make them permanent employees, provide jobs to unemployed youths, extend special grants to minority educational institutions, stop illegal mining activities, release crop insurance, amend the Seeds Act to avoid the marketing of spurious seeds and regularise the services of daily wage workers. They also demanded that additional grant be given for the overall development of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region. They wanted the Government to release Rs. 500 crore for the modernisation of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal and take action to continue work on Narayanapura Right Bank Canal of the Upper Krishna Project between its 95th stretch and 157th stretch to extend irrigation facility to the drought-hit villages in Raichur taluk. Kariyappa Patil, president of the district unit of the party, and secretaries of the party youth wing, Khaja Hussain and Narayana Rao Kulkarni, were present.
