BOMB THREAT: Police personnel checking a room in the administrative block of Gulbarga University on Wednesday.
GULBARGA: A bomb threat at the examination bhavan and the administrative block of Gulbarga University on the outskirts of the city turned out to be a hoax on Wednesday. Following an anonymous call, the district police, with the help of a dog squad, made a thorough check of all the rooms in the two buildings for nearly two hours but found no bomb. Panic stricken employees rushed out of the administrative block and the examination bhavan after an announcement was made about the anonymous call.
Two calls
According to the police, Yellappa Jagalur, Personal Assistant to the Registrar (Evaluation), T.B. Koli, received two calls at 10.05 a.m. and 10.10 a.m. informing him that bombs had been planted in the two buildings and that they would go off within minutes. The caller spoke in Kannada, they said. The university authorities immediately informed the police about the call.
Phones under observation
The police said that efforts were on to trace the call with the help of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. They said all university telephone numbers had been put under observation.
Mischief
The police and the university authorities suspected that mischief mongers among students might have made the call with a view to disrupting the fourth semester postgraduate science examination. Vice-Chancellor Pratap Singh Tiwari said the examination was gone through as scheduled and students writing the examination in other buildings on the campus were not informed of the bomb threat.
