Margao: Defending champion Dempo Sports Club humbled Kolkata's Mohammedan Sporting 3-1 and registered its third consecutive win in the second leg of the 10th ONGC Cup National Football League at the Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. Sameer Naik (6th minute), Isfaq Ahmed (53rd) and Robert Mendes Silva (59th) scored for Dempo, while Mohammedan Sporting's lone goal was an own goal by Dempo's defender Ravanan in the 47th minute. With five wins, four draws and three losses, Dempo is now level with Sporting Club de Goa with 19 points each. Meanwhile Mohammedan Sporting remained on 14 points from 13 outings. In the 6th minute Sameer Naik brought up the lead, when Robert Mendes Silva initiated a move and put the ball into the box which rival defender David failed to clear. Naik pounced upon the opportunity and unleashed a powerful shot over the head of rival goalkeeper Das. Dempo could have increased the lead in the 17th minute had Isfaq Ahmad not missed a sitter off a well-measured pass from Beto. Dempo had another chance to consolidate the lead four minutes before the breather when Sameer Naik from the left flank made a cross to Renty Martin whose header hit the post and rebounded into play.
Own goal
In the 47th minute came the own goal by Dempo defender Ravanan who was trying to clear the ball. Dempo played with renewed vigour after half-time and increased the lead in the 53rd minute through Isfaq Ahmad, whose right footer from outside the box found the net. Six minutes later, Dempo sealed the fate of the match, scoring the third goal through Robert Mendes Silva following a defensive lapse. Dempo's Isfaq Ahmed was adjudged man-of-the-match. UNI
