Udhagamandalam: The stage is set for the 120th racing season scheduled to begin here on April 14. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the season, according to the Madras Race Club (MRC) secretary, Dharmasenan Ebenezer. There would be 28 meetings and the curtain will come down on June 16. While the prestigious Nilgiris Derby Stakes would be run on May 12, the traditional and most popular race, Nilgiris Gold Cup, would be held on May 18. The Nilgiris Fillies Stakes race will be held on April 27 and the Nilgiris Colts Trial Stakes on April 28. A record number of 713 horses have already arrived here. A sum of Rs. 1,32,28,000 would be the stakes money for the season and cups worth Rs. 2,95,000 would be presented for the special races. All the races would be held in the morning. Following a few sharp showers over the past few days the underfoot conditions at the course are ideal for racing. — Special Correspondent
