Pakistan begins with a win

CHANGZHOU: Pakistan began its campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Canada in the BDO hockey World Cup qualifier that got underway here on Wednesday.

Twelve teams have been divided into two pools based on the Sahara World Hockey team rankings, with Pakistan and New Zealand being the top seeds in their respective groups.

The top five teams will make it to the 11th World Cup to be held at Monchengladbach, Germany between September 6 and 17.

Seven teams — Argentina, Australia, Germany, India, Netherlands, South Africa and Spain have already booked their places to Germany.

The groupings: Pool A: Pakistan, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, England and Ireland. Pool B: New Zealand, China, France, Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

Other results: Belgium bt Egypt 5-2; Korea drew with France 2-2; New Zealand bt China 4-1; England bt Ireland 5-1; Japan bt Malaysia 1-0.
