CHENNAI: The implementation of solid waste management (landfill) projects will be smooth, the people is sensitised to the need for creating such facilities, and the objections of residents are considered at the planning stage itself, Municipal Administration Secretary Sheela Priya said on Wednesday. Such projects across the State could not go ahead owing to objections, though technology and funds were available. Hence, it was important to look at education and information mechanisms to carry society along. Since administrators played a pivotal role, "a high standard of understanding, awareness and awakening among the Municipal and Corporation Commissioners is required," she said, inaugurating the seminar on energy recovery from urban and industrial waste. Ajit K. Gupta, Adviser (Urban, Industrial and Commercial Applications Group), Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, said problems relating to solid waste management were increasing with the rise in population and economic activities.
