Indira Kumari joins DMK

CHENNAI: Indira Kumari, who was a Minister in the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government during 1991-96, joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Wednesday along with her supporters.

Admitting them into the party, DMK president M. Karunanidhi, emphasised the need for women to be progressive. He had been highlighting the importance of women empowerment for long. Ms. Indira Kumari said she and her supporters would work for the success of the party in the May 8 elections. — Special Correspondent

SP releases list

CHENNAI: Samajwadi Party on Wednesday released its first list of candidates for 11 constituencies for the coming Assembly elections in the State. State president of the party M. Gopalakrishnan announced the names of candidates for Purasawalkam, Tambaram, Madurantakam, Poompuhar, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Bhuvanagiri, Mugaiyur, Rasiuram and Mannargudi constituencies. The party, he said, would release its second list of candidates soon. — Special Correspondent

HC reconstitutes Rule Committee

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has reconstituted its Rule Committee. According to a gazette notification dated April 10, the new 10-member committee will now be headed by Justice P. Sathasivam, third seniormost judge of the court. Two other judges — Justice R. Balasubramanian and Justice C. Nagappan — too have been included in the committee. Besides the Principal Judge of the City Civil Court, who will be the ex-officio member, six senior advocates too find a place in the committee.

While senior advocate G. Masilamani will be the Member of the Committee, five other senior advocates — Nalini Chidambaram, K.M. Vijayan, S.V. Jayaraman, Sriram Panchu and Arvind Datar — are the Members. — Special Correspondent

Special train to Coimbatore

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will run a special train between Chennai and Coimbatore. The Chennai Central - Coimbatore special (no.0623) will leave Chennai at 10-30 p.m. on April 13 and reach Coimbatore at 7-30 a.m. the next day.

In the return direction, train no. 0624) Coimbatore - Chennai Central special will leave Coimbatore at 11-45 p.m. on April 14 and arrive here at 8 a.m. the next day. The train will stop at Arakkonam, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Erode, and Tiruppur. Train no.0624 will also stop at Perambur, says a railway release. — Special Correspondent

Energy theft detected

CHENNAI: A case of energy theft worth nearly Rs.10 lakh by a prawn culture unit at Parangipettai falling under the Cuddalore Electricity Distribution Circle of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board was detected recently. The theft by the low-tension industrial consumer whose modus was `direct hook' came to light during a raid by the Villupuram Enforcement Squad of the Board's Tiruchi Enforcement Division.

Since the consumer came forward to compound the case in lieu of criminal proceedings and remitted Rs. 4.40 lakh no police complaint was lodged.— Staff Reporter

One killed in accident

TIRUPATTUR: One person died and three were injured when the car in which they were travelling rammed a mini bus at Kethandapatti near here on Monday night.

Police said Palanisamy (38) of Tiruppur was returning from Tirupati along with his wife and daughters. The car, driven by Palanisamy's brother-in-law Rajendra Kumar rammed the mini bus. Rajendra Kumar died on the spot. Palanisamy, his wife and children were injured. — Staff Reporter

Extend bus service to Tirupur: Chamber

PUDUKOTTAI : The Aranthangi Chamber of Commerce has urged the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation authorities to extend the Aranthangi-Karur bus service up to Tirupur for the benefit of traders, agriculturists and general public.

In a memorandum to the Managing Director, TNSTC, Kumbakonam, chamber president L. Kailasanathan said the traders, agriculturists and the general public had to proceed to Tirupur from Aranthangi.

If the Aranthangi-Karur bus was extended up to Tirupur, it would be of great help to all sections of the society.

The chamber has thanked the TNSTC for operating bus service from Aranthangi to Karur.

Four women killed

TIRUCHI : Four women were fatally hit by a van while walking along road near Vaiyampatti on Tuesday.

While Rangammal (35), Sakkaraiammal (38), and Muthammal (30) of Sadayampatti died on the spot, Mariammal (40) also belonging to the same village succumbed to injuries at the Manapparai Government Hospital.

The van was proceeding towards Tirunelveli from Vellore.

The Vaiyampatti police have arrested van driver Prakash (31) of Vellore.

Free heart surgery

TIRUCHI : The KMC Heart City Hospital has performed a major heart surgery free of cost on an eight-year old boy hailing from a poor family at Lalgudi near here.

Shastivel had a hole in his heart and his father, a daily wage earner in a knitwear factory at Tirupur, was unable to afford treatment. The hospital, with the help of the Tiruchi branch of the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangam, which came forward to bear the medicine expenses worth Rs.50,000, performed the surgery free of cost.

The team of cardiac surgeons, led by T. Senthil Kumar, performed the operation without accepting any fee, according to a release from the hospital.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.32 feet today. The inflow was 1439 cusecs and the outflow 2000 cusecs.

Election observers appointed

TIRUNELVELI : The Election Commission has appointed 13 observers, including 11 Indian Administrative Service officers, for the district to ensure free and fair election and monitor poll expenditure.

An official statement said Sriram Taranikanti (Ambasamudram), Sanjay Prasad (Nanguneri), Hari Ramulu (Tenkasi), Mahendra Kumar Surana (Alangulam), Manohar Kant Kalohia (Kadayanallur), V.M. Patil (Sankarankovil), L.V. Deshmuk (Radhapuram), Popatbhai B. Patani (Cheranmahadevi), Rameshwar Prasad Gupta (Tirunelveli), Chaitanya Prasad (Vasudevanallur) and Rameshwar Singh (Palayamkottai) had been appointed to monitor campaigning and other election-related proceedings in their constituencies concerned.

The ECI also appointed Shivaji Hanumant Dange to monitor poll expenditures in Palayamkotai, Cheranmahadevi, Ambasamudram, Nanguneri and Radhapuram constituencies and S.C. Sonkar, a 1993 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, for Sankarankovil, Vasudevanallur, Kadayanallur, Tenkasi, Alangulam and Tirunelveli segments, the statement added.

Life term for murdering man

TIRUNELVELI : A Fast Track Court here has sentenced a youth to life term for murdering his elder brother.

According to prosecution S. Subbiah Pandian (48) of Ilavankulam under the Sankarankovil police station limits had a dispute with his younger brother, S. Pauldurai (30) of the same area, over drawing water from their common well for irrigation. When an altercation resurfaced on June 11, 2005, Pauldurai attacked his brother with a log in which he died on the spot.

The Fast Track Court I judge, Vanangaamudi, sentenced Pauldurai to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 4,000 on Wednesday.

Life term for two

ERODE: The Principal District Judge, R. Mohan Doss, has sentenced to life two persons on Tuesday.

The prosecution case was that Palanisamy of Punnam near Appakudal in Bhavani taluk had a land dispute with Aandiappan, Thangavel and four others of the same area. On January 22, this year, when Palanisamy was going in his cycle, Aandiappan, Thangaval and two others waylaid him and hacked him to death.

The Judge awarded life sentence to Aandiappan and Thangavel and acquitted the others.

Poll boycott threat

ERODE: Over 300 voters of State Bank Nagar near Erode have decided to boycott the poll if their demand to solve the water problem is not met. A flex board placed at Moolapalayam by the people of State Bank Nagar in 46 Pudur Panchayat, situated in Modakurichi constituency, stated that two years ago under the Sujildhara scheme, an overhead water tank was constructed to store Cauvery water and supply it to the residents of State Bank Nagar. But till date, nothing has happened. Hence, the boycott threat.
