Kannur town wears a festive look

KANNUR: Commercial fairs, street vendors and scores of impromptu stalls selling fireworks have given a festive appearance to the town, which has geared up for brisk business ahead of Vishu.

People are thronging shops and commercial fairs in the town with the festival just a few days away. Street vendors selling everything from toys and children's apparels to earthen ware are raking in moolah.

Makeshift stalls on the footpaths in busy areas here are a familiar sight now. Textile shops and shops selling electronic goods here are also witnessing a heavy rush of customers this festive season. Shops selling fireworks usually mushroom in the town a month before Vishu. People continue to buy crackers till the eve of the festival.

Traditional firecrackers have been replaced by Chinese ones. Customers buy boxes containing a variety of firework items ranging from fancy varieties to high-decibel crackers. A popular piece of firework, sky shot, is priced at Rs.250 a piece. The handloom fair, being organised by weavers' co-operative societies, at the Collectorate Maidan is a big draw. Handloom weavers' societies, within the district and outside, are participating in the exhibition that has on display various handloom products. Hanveev and Hantex showrooms have set up stalls at the fair. An exhibition-cum-sale of products by women entrepreneurs in the district is also on at the venue.

The ongoing commercial and entertainment fair, Summer Fiesta, under the aegis of the Y's Men's Club at the Police Maidan here, adds to the festive ambience. Shops selling household electronic goods are wooing customers with various sales promotion schemes and festival offers.
