NEW DELHI: Industrial growth surged to 8.8 per cent in February, mainly aided by the buoyancy witnessed by two major sectors, manufacturing and electricity. But for the low growth in mining, the overall growth would have been still higher. According to quick estimates of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) here, the general index for February stood at 227.3, working out to an increase of 8.8 per cent as compared to the level prevailing in February last year. The performance achieved by the three sectors mining, manufacturing and electricity for February, as per the IIP, translates to growth rates of 0.9 per cent, 9.5 per cent and nine per cent, respectively when compared to that in February 2005. The cumulative growth during April-February 2005-06 over the same period of 2004-05 in the three sectors are 0.5 per cent, nine per cent and 5.3 per cent, respectively resulting in an overall growth rate of eight per cent for the 11-month period. In terms of industries, as per two-digit classification, 13 out of the 17 groups have shown positive growth during February 2006 as compared to the same month in 2005. The highest growth at 20.3 per cent was witnessed by the `other manufacturing industries' group, followed by 16.2 per cent in `food products' and 15.5 per cent in `textile products (including wearing apparel).' On the other hand Wood and wood products followed by leather and leather & fur products registered negative growth. .
