KOCHI: The intensive employment generation and enterprise development programme `Prathyasa' has hit the target in Ernakulam district, with a total of 2,585 new enterprises launching operations till the end of March this year. The Prathyasa scheme got under way with the aim of establishing 2,500 units and providing employment to 10,000 people. The District Industries Centre received 4,763 applications of which 2,763 came under the general SSI category while the rest were under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) scheme. After screening of the applications, 4,513 were found eligible for bank linkage. Of them, 2,713 units came under the general SSI category while 1,800 came under the PMRY scheme. Bank linkages were made available to a total of 2,680 units, of which 900 units were in the general SSI category while 1,780 were under the PMRY scheme. The District Industries Centre has provided its share of Rs.1 crore to the units that have started operations under the Prathyasa scheme. The new units have provided employment to 9,012 persons, marginally below the targeted 10,000. However, District Industries Centre officials are hopeful that this would be made up as there are still viable units scheduled to start operations. In the meanwhile, the Industries Centre has met the target for the PMRY scheme for the third year in succession. The target for the last financial year under the PMRY scheme was 2,900 and up to March 31 this year, the Industries Centre had sanctioned the launch of 2,952 units. Of these, 2,361 have received monetary support from the Industries Centre already. The Ernakulam District Industries Centre has been achieving the target for PMRY since 2003-2004. The banks in the forefront include Canara Bank, State Bank of India, State Bank of Travancore, Union Bank, Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank and Federal Bank.
