London: Former England batsman Nick Knight is to retire from first-class cricket at the end of this summer, it was announced on Wednesday. Knight played 17 Tests and 100 one-day internationals and also captained Warwickshire to the County championship title in 2004.

The 36-year old has scored more than 28,000 runs in all competitions since making his first appearance for Essex in 1990. However, his England debut came five years later following his move north to Edgbaston to join Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

Although he was a good enough Test player to score 113 against Pakistan at Headingly in 1996, it was as a one-day player that he really made his mark at international level.

Knight hit five one-day centuries and 25 fifties for England before calling time on his international career after the 2003 World Cup. He took over the Warwickshire captaincy that summer and their County championship win in 2004 was a testament to his leadership qualities. At the end of the 2005 season, however, he gave up the job, which has since passed on to Heath Streak.

On his retirement announcement, Knight said, "I feel very lucky to have played this game for so long at both County level, with Essex and Warwickshire, and internationally with England. I feel the end of the season is the right time to move on and look to the future, '' he concluded.

Mark Greatbacth, the club's director of coaching added, "Nick has been an integral part of this club and we are lucky to have him for the 2006 season. Hopefully, we can add some silverware to his collection, which will complete what has been a marvellous career in the game.''
