Varun Gopal downs Kiran

Mysore: Fifth seed Varun Gopal of Karnataka played a consistent baseline game to register an upset 6-3, 6-1 win over State-mate and third seed C.M. Kiran to enter the semifinals of the boys' under-16 singles in the AITA Talent Series tennis tournament for juniors conducted by Innerwheel Club of Mysore Central at the MTC courts here on Wednesday.

In the boys' under-12 singles, fifth seeded T. Nihal of Andhra Pradesh upset State-mate and third seed Sourabh Sachdeva 10-3 (best of 19 games) to sail into the last four stage.

Padmapriya upset

In the girls' under-14 singles, Shree Sanjana of Tamil Nadu shocked third-seeded Karnataka lass A.K. Padmapriya 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to book a place in the semifinals.

Top-seeded C.M. Kiran of Karnataka quelled the challenge put up by S. Karan (Karnataka) 6-3, 6-2 to enter the semifinals in the boys' under-14 singles section. Second seeded Chirag S. Igoor (Kar) got the better of Varun Sathyanarayanan 6-2, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

Seeded players, Vibhav M. Iyengar, M.D. Shreyas and H.J. Prajwal won their respective quarterfinal matches in the boys' under-16 section to make it to the semifinals. In the girls' under-14 & under-16 sections, top-seed V. Nayanatara (AP) and second seed Rachana R. Gowda (Kar) sailed into the last four stage in both the sections.
