Accused of taking bribe for permitting PG course

  • Campus rocks with protests
  • Semester examinations in Anantapur and Kurnool districts cancelled
  • EC takes stock of the fallout

ANANTAPUR: Registrar of Sri Krishnadevaraya University T. Srinivasulu Reddy was suspended by in-charge Vice-Chancellor and Rector C. R. Visveswar Rao on Wednesday on the charge of accepting bribe for granting permission for post-graduate course in a private college at Allagadda in Kurnool district.

The Registrar was allegedly exposed in a joint sting operation by a regional news channel and newspaper in Hyderabad on Tuesday with the help of the victim -- correspondent of the private college. He had been allegedly denying permission for M.Sc. chemistry in the college for the last two years though the college is eligible.

The issue of acceptance of bribe by the Registrar had rocked the university campus since morning. Several student unions protested seeking immediate removal of the Registrar. The university authorities had to cancel the semester examinations slated for Wednesday in Anantapur and Kurnool districts due to the protests. The acting V-C also sent a report to the State Government explaining the issue.

All-India Students' Federation (AISF) reacted first to the alleged corruption charge by staging a rasta roko on the NH-205, which intersects the university campus, for about an hour. They later swarmed the chambers of the Vice-Chancellor and ransacked it completely, damaging furniture, electronic gadgets and other material available.

Meanwhile, the in-charge V-C convened an emergency Executive Council meeting and discussed the fallout of the issue on the university. Efforts to contact the Registrar by this Correspondent on the phone were futile.
