HYDERABAD: If the Railway Board gives the nod, passengers alighting at Tirupati station will have the comfort of elevators to help them cross platforms. D.N. Mathur General Manager South Central Railway (SCR) is considering passenger elevators that will help the weak-limbed to rise above the platform and cross over to another lift to alight by the roadside. Proposals to this effect have been sent to the Railway Board.
Board not too keen
Addressing a press conference to announce performance in the fiscal 2005-06, Mr. Mathur said he had actually included proposals to have escalators in Secunderabad first and Tirupati next on the lines of the existing escalator at Vijayawada. However, as a policy the Board was not too keen to go in for escalators, he said. SCR has always been pro-active on improving passenger amenities, the Railway Officer said adding that on an average Rs. 12 crore to Rs. 15 crore was spent annually on amenities. In 2005-06, they had spent Rs. 41 crore and had sanction to spend over Rs. 30 crore this year. Forty one `A' and `B' category stations have been identified to be developed as model stations, he said.
