GMR group firms raided

Officials acted on a tip-off from New Delhi

HYDERABAD: Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence raided the offices of Vasavi Impex and Satvik Impex of the GMR Group in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Bangalore, Surat and New Delhi simultaneously on Wednesday and reportedly detected irregularities committed by the companies under Duty Exemption Entitlement Policy and Draw Back facilities of over Rs.3.5 crores. The tip-off came from New Delhi and the department sleuths are still probing the records.

According to information reaching here, the officials of Hyderabad raided the offices of these companies in the State while their counterparts raided the offices elsewhere. These raids revealed that the management had obtained permission for export of garments to Russia in 2001 from the Director-General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce. Instead of exporting garments, the companies were allegedly exporting scrap in the name of garments. They further exploited the provision of exemptions to secure Foreign Exchange benefit.

The companies routed the "exports" through Delhi via Hyderabad. It is suspected this was one way of hawala deal.
