Handicrafts exhibition

NEW DELHI: As part of the Tamil New Year celebrations, the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation is organising an 11-day exhibition-cum-sale of art objects at the State Emporia Complex on Baba Kharak Singh Marg here beginning today (April 13).

A collection of rare pieces of bronze, woodcarvings and Thanjavur picture paintings will be showcased at the exhibition.

Popularly known as Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation is a public sector undertaking of Tamil Nadu set up in 1973.

Tips on cardiac pain

NEW DELHI: Heart Care Foundation of India president K. K. Aggarwal on Wednesday said any chest pain that was less than 30 seconds in duration or could be pinpointed by a finger was not a cardiac pain.

Speaking at a doctors' workshop organised by Moolchand Medcity here, Dr. Aggarwal said onset of breathlessness after the age of 40 was cardiac in origin unless proved otherwise.

On symptoms of asthma, Dr. Aggarwal said all wheeze was not asthma and all asthmatics do not wheeze. He pointed out that bluish discoloration of the tongue or the nails, respiratory rate of more than 30 per minute were the warning signals for immediate hospitalisation.

Mixed land use hailed

NEW DELHI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has welcomed the Urban Development Ministry's recent notification on mixed land use in residential areas.

In a statement on Wednesday, CII said the step would meet the growing need for commercial space for the trading community in the Capital. It suggested that permission be given for total commercial use of space that was built primarily for commercial activity and recommended that a "conversion fee'' be charged for those wishing to change usage from residential to commercial.

CII cautioned the Ministry that the provision would have an adverse effect if not implemented strictly in accordance with the notification.

Army expedition

NEW DELHI: The Army Chief, General J. J. Singh, flagged off a 19-member mountaineering team to Mount Cho Oyu on Wednesday. The team is led by Lieutenant-Colonel Anand Swaroop, an experienced mountaineer who has taken part in three major expeditions to 8,000-metre high peaks. The team will leave for Lhasa via Kathmandu on Thursday and is expected to reach the base camp on April 20.

Mount Cho Oyu, an 8201-metre peak, is the sixth highest in the world and is located 20 km west of Mount Everest. The first Indian expedition to Cho Oyu was undertaken way back in 1958 when two sherpas scaled the peak. Since then no other Indian team has attempted the peak.
