THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The vice-chancellor of Kerala University Dr. M.K. Ramachandran Nair said that the work on the relaying of the synthetic track at the University Stadium would be over before the onset of monsoon. He was speaking at the Sports Merit Award function organised by the Department of Physical Education here on Wednesday. Nair said the University was not taking any step-motherly attitude towards sports. He said that the University, despite a yearly budget deficit of Rs. 15 crore, has shelled out nearly Rs. 11 lakh for giving prize money to the sportspersons.
Semi-academic courses
He also added that the Kerala University would soon start semi-academic courses for sportspersons under its Centre for Adult and Continuing Education Department. Sports training incentive of Rs. 4,000 was distributed to 90 sportspersons who had performed well in inter-University meets during 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Sports talent scholarship of Rs. 1,200 was given to 608 sportspersons who had represented the University in inter-University competitions during 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons respectively.
Trophies presented
The G.V. Raja memorial ever rolling trophy for the best college (men) was given to S.N. College, Chempazanthy, and the Susan Mable Thomas memorial ever rolling trophy for best college (women) was given to LNCPE. Dr. R. Thirumalaiswamy, vice-chancellor, Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, Chennai, was the chief guest. K.A. Hashim, registrar, welcomed the gathering while Arjuna Awardee and former volleyball international S. Gopimath, IPS, delivered a special message on the occasion. Principal Correspondent
