More student-friendly DU admission forms this year

It may be still a good two months to go before Delhi University gets down to its annual admission grind and the university community may be busy debating and discussing the reservation issue, but work has already begun for the big race that the campus witnesses every year.

Concerned that the reserved category students may be losing time and missing classes because of their extended admission schedule, the University is now considering the possibility of compressing the time frame.

As of now, the admission schedule for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes students extends till September, while regular college classes begin in July.

"Many reserved category students who get admitted late often miss their classes, so we are looking at the possibility of completing the admission of the reserved category students along with others from this year. As of now we are still looking at the feasibility of such a change,'' said Delhi University Dean of Students Welfare Satinder Vij.

As has been the case over the last couple of years, the University is this time too going for some experimentation. Replacing the ICR forms this year will be the Optical Magnetic Reader (OMR) forms that the university believes will make things simpler for students. According to university officials, the new form will not just be easy to fill, it will also give students more options by giving them a chance to apply for an unlimited number of courses and colleges.

While noting that the procedure and forms will be more student-friendly, Prof. Vij said the university is also making efforts to make the eligibility conditions of all colleges available to students from a single point so they don't have to individually go to every college.

The Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding with the renowned French institute GEM for transfer of technological knowledge as well as students and faculty.

Describing it as a historic occasion for the institute, NSIT Director Ranjit Singh noted that it was the first time that NSIT had entered in to such an agreement with a foreign Institute. He added that the agreement would provide students and faculty on either side with opportunities to enhance their learning processes and explore the systems and knowledge on either side.

As part of the MoU, the faculty from GEM will visit the NSIT campus in October to deliver lectures, while NSIT students will be sent to France for summer internship at the GEM campus in Paris.
