CPI(M) reviews poll scenario

ALAPPUZHA: The CPI(M) State secretariat met at P.Krishna Pillai Bhavan, headquarters of the Alappuzha district committee, on Wednesday morning. The secretariat reviewed the campaign of the CPI(M) in the southern districts that go to polls in the first phase. It concluded that the emerging political situation was advantageous to the LDF. Party State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan would be touring the districts in the coming days. The secretariat also noted that the DIC(K) workers were still sympathetic to the LDF though the leaders of that party had entered into an alliance with the UDF. The secretariat would hold its next meeting in Thrissur. Those who took part in the meeting included Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan, leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan, T.M. Thomas Issac, MLA, and CITU leader P.K. Gurudasan. — Staff Reporter

Special train to Hubli

Thiruvananthapuram: The Railways will run weekly special trains in the Hubli-Kochuveli-Hubli sector between April 13 and June 29 to clear the extra rush of passengers. According to the Railways, the 0671 Hubli-Kochuveli Weekly Special will start from Hubli on every Tuesday at 1.45 p.m. to reach Kochuveli the next day at 4.30 p.m. In the return direction, the 0672 Kochuveli-Hubli Weekly Special Weekly Special will depart from Kochuveli on every Thursday at 12.45 noon to reach Hubli the next day at 4.40 p.m. The 0672 special train will operate from Kochuveli on April 13, 20 and 27, May 4, 11, 18 and 25 and June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. The 0671 special train will operate from Hubli on April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, June 6, 13, 20 and 27. The train will have one AC 2-Tier, one AC 3-Tier, 10 Sleeper Class, 4 General Second Class and 2 Luggage-cum-brake van coaches, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Governor's Vishu greetings

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.L. Bhatia has sent his Vishu greetings to the people of the State. In his message, issued here on Wednesday, he said: "I greet the people of Kerala on the auspicious occasion of Vishu, the traditional harvest festival. Holiday declared

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has declared April 14 as public holiday for all public sector undertakings in the State in connection with the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar. — Special Correspondent

Woman found dead

Thrissur: The body of Sarojini, 55, wife of Velayudhan of Karanchira House at Mullanikkadavu, was found hanging from a tree near her house on Wednesday. The police suspect that she had committed suicide after being served an eviction notice. Her house was collateral security for a loan of Rs. 35,000 she took from the Nedupuzha Cooperative Bank seven years ago. Default on loan repayment led to the eviction notice. The police said that Sarojini's husband was ailing. A case has been registered. — Staff Reporter

Accused arrested

THRISSUR: The police have arrested seven persons in connection with several cases, including murder, from Triprayar.

The police gave their names as Chulur Suresh, 22, of Valappad, and six others, Abhinraj, 20, Anish, 24, Sijil, 22, Satheesh, 21, Sanal, 23, and Subhish, 21, of Chamakkala. The gang was arrested following a tip-off. The police said the gang members were working as hired goondas. — Staff Reporter

Sabha stand

THRISSUR: Yogakshema Sabha office-bearers have said that its members will vote for candidates who commit themselves to providing `equal social justice to all,' irrespective of their political affiliation, in the coming Assembly elections, they said at a press conference here on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter
