Madikeri: Members representing various Adivasi groups in Kodagu went on a day's hunger strike in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Wednesday extending support to the protest by Medha Patkar, who is leading the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Leaders of the organisations, in a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urged him to take action to rehabilitate 35,000 Adivasis, who were displaced due to the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in the Narmada Valley. The Government should assure the people of the country that it would not increase the height of the dam, which could submerge more lands, they said. The leaders included J.P. Raju of the Budakattu Krishikara Sangha (BKS), Roy David of the Coorg Organisation for Rural Development (CORD), K.N. Vittala of the Indian National Social and Action Forum (INSAF), J.K. Ramu, president of the Virajpet unit of the BKS and BKS leaders from Chikmagalur. They submitted a memorandum to the district administration later in the evening, to be sent to the Prime Minister.
