Staff Correspondent
SHIMLA: Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh has made a fervent appeal to the country's "BIMARU" and backward hill States, most of which are landlocked, to come forward and participate in exports and end the hegemony of "the big five" that are cornering 70 per cent of the export business. Talking to media persons here after a formal meeting with State Government officials on how to improve exports from Himachal, he said the peripheral States would have to come out of the fixed mind-set of just earning foreign exchange by exports. The increase in exports would also solve the grave problem of unemployment in the non-industrial States, he emphasised. He said the riches that exports bring should also go to other States and not just to the big ones -- Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Karnatka. His Ministry was laying special emphasis now on making smaller States realise their export potentials, he added.
