CHANDIGARH: A team of the Haryana Health Department on Wednesday claimed to have caught Vijay Bhargava of Bhargava Hospital and Nursing Home, Rewari red-handed while allegedly taking a bribe of Rs. 2,350 for a sex determination test conducted by her. An official spokesman said that the ultrasound machine of the nursing home had been seized and sealed and action had been initiated under the Pre-natal Diagnostic Technique Act. The six-member team was led by the Director-General of Health Services, N.K. Sharma. A decoy customer---- a four-month pregnant woman- was sent with numbered currency notes to the nursing home. Dr.Vijay Bhargava reportedly conducted the sex determination test and also disclosed the sex of the foetus. The clinic was raided and the numbered currency notes were recovered from the accused. The spokesman said it was also found that the records were not being maintained properly. No referral slip was found which mentioned reasons for conducting ultra-sonography. He pointed out that the Haryana Government had constituted a State Appropriate Authority under the chairmanship of the Director-General of Health Services with Joint Legal Remembrancer and Deputy Director, Women and Child Development as its members. District Appropriate Authorities had also been set up. State and District Task Forces had been constituted for implementation of the PNDT Act as the Government was committed to curb the menace of female foeticide. It may be recalled that the first conviction of a case under PNDT Act in Haryana was made on March 28 this year when a court had sentenced Anil Sabhani of Palwal and one Kartar Singh, technician, to undergo simple imprisonment for two years and pay a fine of Rs. 5,000 each. In another case, charges have been framed in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Gurgaon, against Surinder Yadav of Nawal Diagnostic and Imaging Centre, Gurgaon.
