Curfew relaxed in Aligarh; Adityanath detained

No untoward incident reported; Aligarh Muslim University examinations on schedule

ALIGARH: Curfew was relaxed on Wednesday for two hours in phases in the riot-affected areas of the town for the first time since it was clamped last week given an overall improvement in the law and order situation.

In outlying areas of the old city, curfew was relaxed for eight hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. while in five police stations areas it was eased for two hours sector-wise, a senior police official said.

It would be relaxed in the first two phases in localities under the Kotwali and Sasni Gate police stations while in the Delhi Gate areas it would be done in the evening, he said.

He said no untoward incident had been reported from anywhere in the city since Tuesday.

Members of the two communities were meanwhile showing ``remarkable restraint'' despite the provocative allegations BJP vice-president Kalyan Singh made about Kanpur Range Inspector- General of Police Rizwan Ahmad, Aligarh Congress MP Brijendra Chaudhry said.

The allegation that MLA Deoki Nandan Kori's son Triloki, who died in renewed violence on Saturday, was circumcised and buried was ``shocking and a sign of total bankruptcy in the senior national leadership of the BJP'', he said.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Gorakhpur Mahant Adityanath was taken into preventive custody while he was addressing a news conference at a hotel here in violation of the ban on entry of political and religious into the curfew-bound town.

The saffron party leader was detained at around 5 pm when he was addressing the media at Green Hotel in the Banna Devi police station area.

Meanwhile, the examinations of the AMU that had been cancelled in the wake of the communal flare-up will be held as scheduled earlier from Saturday, an AMU spokesman said Wednesday.. PTI
