Bank urged to form weavers' SHGs

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies (Industrial Cooperatives), Karnataka, G.R. Krishnadas, on Wednesday urged the authorities of the South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank (SCDCC) to take the lead along with the Department of Textiles to form self-help groups (SHGs) of weavers and ensure timely and adequate credit to SHGs wherever weavers' cooperative societies are defunct or dormant in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

He was addressing a meeting convened by him here of presidents, directors and secretaries of weavers' cooperative societies from the two districts.

Mr. Krishnadas said weavers' cooperative societies in the two districts had lost their eligibility to get funds from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) as their audit grading was not in the range from A grade to C grade and their sale turnover was not viable. Most of the societies were running under a loss, he added.
