CHENNAI: Artists, rasikas, and well-wishers gathered at Ragasudha Hall on Wednesday for the inauguration of Sri Ragam Fine Arts' Tamil New Year 10th Award and Art Festival, where Carnatic vocalists and dancers were honoured.

Awards instituted in the name of nine luminaries in various fields were given to artists for excellence in their respective fields. Vocalist Gayathri Girish (award in memory of M.L. Vasanthakumari), violinist Neyveli Radhakrishnan (Kumbakonam Rajamanikam Pillai), mridangam artist Venupuri Srinivasan (Thanjavur Vaithiyanatha Iyer), nagaswaram artist P.N. Hariharan (Kulikkarai Pichaiappa Pillai), veena artist Hema Veeraraghavan (Veenai Dhanammal), dancers Krithika Aravind (Panthanallur Meenatchi Sundaram Pillai) and E.V. Saradha (K.N. Thandayuthapani Pillai), tavil artist Thirurameswaram Radhakrishnan (Needamangalam Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai) and mridangam artist Kudanthai A. Saravanan (Thanjavur Upendran).

Vazhuvoor Ravi of Sri Ragam read out each artist's profile, why they were selected and recollected the contributions of the elders in whose name the awards had been instituted.

Former director of Doordarshan Kendra Chennai A. Natarajan suggested that the organisers compile the artist information, painstakingly collected by Mr. Ravi S.V. Krishnan, convenor of Nadha Inbam.

Senior artist P.S. Narayanaswamy complimented Mr. Ravi on his efforts in selecting awardees and organising the art festival.

They also recalled their association with the late Upendran, in whose name a special award was set up.

The festival will be on at Ragasudha Hall, 85/2, Luz Avenue in Mylapore till April 16.
