Disqualification of Deputy Mayor sought

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Congress floor leader in Chennai Corporation Royapuram R. Mano, who is also the party's candidate for the R.K. Nagar constituency in the Assembly elections, has moved the Small Causes Court seeking the disqualification of Deputy Mayor R. Thiagarajan.

On Wednesday, the court served a notice on the Corporation Commissioner, who is a respondent in the petition.

Mr. Mano, in his petition, argued that Mr. Thiagarajan missed three consecutive council meetings. According to the Madras City Municipal Corporation Act, he had thus ceased to be a councillor and lost his right to be Deputy Mayor. Mr. Thiagarajan, is expected to return on Thursday. He is reported to have spent the past few months in Malaysia. He had been sacked from the AIADMK as soon as he went absconding. He is now expected to join the Congress.

Mr. Mano has also been away from the city for the past two weeks. He has moved bail application in the Madras High Court in an assault case and is also expected to return soon.
