"DMK poll announcements viable"

R.K. Radhakrishnan

The party has fulfilled every promise made during Lok Sabha polls, says Karunanidhi

  • AIADMK violating model code
  • EC not taking action

CHENNAI: Defending the practicability of subsidies and welfare schemes he had announced, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M.Karunanidhi contended that the DMK government had always fulfilled promises made to people.

Talking to The Hindu , he said that it was not correct to say that the schemes announced by the DMK in its manifesto were unprecedented.

The party had implemented each one of the promises made in its manifestos. Even after the Lok Sabha elections, the DMK was fulfilling every one of its promises. Many of them, such as making Tamil a classical language and implementing the Sethusamudram canal project, had already been accepted and the remaining promises would be fulfilled in due course of time.

Recalling an instance, he said as the Assembly elections neared, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa began making announcements at the rate of one a day. No one asked her why she was making the announcements or where she would find the finances to implement the projects. Most of these schemes existed only on paper. People wondered whether the DMK's promises could be implemented only because the party had a track record of fulfilling all of them.

Alleging that the ruling party was violating the Model Code of Conduct, Mr.Karunanidhi said that his party and allies in the Democratic Progressive Alliance complained to the Election Commission each time they came across a violation. Expressing disappointment over the Election Commission not taking action in cases, including the stuffing of electoral rolls, he said even if the EC did not give a good decision, the people who read about the violations would.
