HYDERABAD: Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pleaded for the setting up of a branch of National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) in his country to give a fillip to rural development in the war-ravaged nation.

Interacting with the faculty of NIRD here on Wednesday, Mr. Karzai felt the institute could depute its officials for intensive training and research at its branch centre.

He said he believed Afghanistan could be a primary customer for NIRD and if the country used the institute's methods and knowledge properly, it would go a long way in rural development of the country.

He was supplementing a request made by his Cabinet colleague, Hanif Atmar, Minister for Rural Development, who sought the intake of Afghan trainees at NIRD from 12 to 200.

NIRD Director-General V.S. Sampath was present.
