HYDERABAD: Take a minute before throwing away waste paper for it could actually make you richer by a few rupees. This is exactly what 142 city schools have experienced over the last three months as part of a waste paper collection and recycling initiative - `InBhadra -Mitr', spearheaded by ITC Limited, along with Sukuki Exnora, a city-based solid waste management NGO. Students in these schools have been sensitised to environment conservation and have actually been segregating waste paper and pencil shavings into green bins and biodegradable waste into red bins. Sukuki collects the waste paper after weighing and recording the quantity, which is then sent to ITC to be recycled as toothpaste covers, writing paper etc. A van with a Sukuki representative visits every school periodically to collect the waste papers and "when the quantity becomes substantial, the school receives a monetary compensation," Major Shiva Kiran, president of Sukuki Exnora said at the launch of this initiative in the city on Wednesday. The compensation Sukuki hands over to schools is reimbursed by ITC. This creates a revenue stream for waste paper from schools and also educates students. At a function organised in the city, 12 schools that topped in the paper collection exercise received cheques from the Rajesh Tiwari, Member Secretary, State Pollution Control Board.
