Solution, please! I am a resident of Sivaram Nagar located near the Valankulam tank. From the day Siruthuli started working on the Valankulam project, water from the tank has been flowing into vacant sites here. "Valankulam is the most polluted lake in and around Coimbatore," says Mr. Suresh, Apex Member - Siruthuli ( in these columns, The Hindu , dated April 4). For the last one week piglets have been roaming the area. If this continues, it could cause an epidemic. P. Sasi Kala, Ramanathapuram. Importance of basic science The Harvard University Dean of Engineering and Applied Sciences Prof. Narayanamurti has rightly pointed out the importance of basic sciences in the field of engineering and the importance of interdisciplinary research activities in engineering in his lecture at Amrita Deemed University. For upgrading the engineering education in India to international level, the students of the first year engineering course onwards should be made to realise the applications of basic sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology in the field of engineering. For that the students (60) as a group ( 6 x 10 groups) can be given the assignments one or two per semester based on modern scientific world. Followed by this a brief viva-voce can be conducted to find out each student's ability to understand the matter and their involvement in writing the assignment and the marks awarded can be included in the internal assessment. Such exercises motivate the students to make good use of the college library as well as the internet facilities from their starting point of engineering career. Dr. C. Daniel Yesudian, Karunya Deemed University. Unwise decision Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Southern Railways, Palakkad, has shocked commuters by his announcement on terminating the MG trains at Podanur from May 1. Railways hopes that TNSTC, Coimbatore division, will operate bus services between Gandhipuram and Podanur (via) Coimbatore Junction and Ukkadam. Perhaps the railways does not know about the shortage of staff in TNSTC, Coimbatore. I request the Southern Railway officers to visit the city bus stand here and find out how many buses are parked for want of crew. I am sure that there is no possibility of TNSTC operating bus services as the railways has said. I request the railways to revoke the decision. Otherwise, commuters from south settled at Coimbatore may face untold sufferings. N.R. Ravisankar, Vilankurichi. Retrograde step Southern Railways' decision to terminate MG service at Podanur with effect from May 1 ( The Hindu , April 9) is a retrograde step as most of the passengers travelling by these trains are bound for Coimbatore from Madurai, Dindigul and Pollachi . Introduction of the mixed gauge concept at Coimbatore Junction and continuation with the existing arrangement of terminating their services at Coimbatore Junction will be in the best interests of the numerous commuters, among whom are several office-goers and businessmen. The proposed arrangements with the State Transport Corporation will surely prove to be inadequate to meet the requirements of the large number of the passengers, especially during the peak hours. The move is neither logical nor passenger-friendly. K.D. Viswanaathan, Thadagam Road. Membership transfer I am a member of District Central Library. Owing to shifting of my residence from Perur to Singanallur, I wanted to change my membership from Coimbatore District Central Library to Ramnathapuram branch library. I have already requested the Central Library authorities to transfer my membership to Ramanathapuram branch library. But they advised me to surrender the membership card in Central Library and to open a new membership in Ramanathapuram Library. This will cause inconvenience and waste of time. I request the District Library Authorities to allow the transfer system from District Central Library to its other branch Libraries within the district. A. Prabhu, Singanallur. Speed breakers The junction near the Gandhipuram Central Town bus-stand is proving to be a dangerous turning point near Aarvee Hotels. Buses plying to and from Coimbatore turn at a great speed not allowing the bus coming at opposite direction to cross. I recommend to the Corporation to place speed breakers to avoid accidents at this junction. Douglasraja, Coimbatore. (Readers' can mailto wscbe@thehindu.co.in)
