Steely self-belief yields rich dividend

  • Total applicants from Hyderabad --10,000
  • Approximate successful applicants --120
  • Total seats in six IIMs --1400

HYDERABAD: Of 10,000 aspirants from Hyderabad who took the Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission into the six Indian Institutes of Management, around 120 have made it, according to preparatory institutes in the city. There are 1,400 seats in six IIMs in the country. The CAT results were announced on Wednesday. "By 8.a.m., IIM- Ahmedabad, Calcutta and Bangalore announced the results, by 10.30 a.m. Lucknow was up and Kozhikode by 11.30 a.m, Indore came out late into the evening by 6.15 p.m," according to S.P.N. Prasad Rao, assistant general manager, IMS, Hyderabad. Of the 5,300 aspirants who appeared from TIME, 70 are expected to make it, according to Manek Daruwala, Director of TIME. Of 800 candidates from IMS, who appeared for the test, 42 made it, said an excited Mr. Prasad Rao. Of these, 38 are engineers, one Chartered Accountant, one from M.Sc (IT), one from MCA and one a B.Com student.

    No woman aspirant

But no women aspirants have figured in this tally. Except for three, others have work experience ranging from six to 42 months, Mr. Prasad Rao added. "When I saw the results, I could not believe my eyes," exclaimed Vipul Jain, a 25-year-old software engineer who got through the test "I feel on top of the world," was how the this achiever reacted crediting time management for tilting the balance in his favour.

Kaushik Mukherjee, a 23-year-old engineer from BITS-Pilani working for a top software company in the city who has also made it to all six IIMs said, it was self-belief that saw him through, "People have dreams but they don't have the faith to realise these dreams. They judge themselves by the way others see them, but they should go out and prove everyone else wrong," said Kaushik.

Both Kaushik and Vipul trained by IMS and have chosen IIM-Ahmedabad. But for 23-year-old Jatin Babani, a B.Com student from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Sainikpuri, it was "the worst and the best day of his life". He waited to see his name but could not and after repeated disappointments heaved a sigh of relief on learning that he has made it to IIM-Indore.
