Goel seeks special session of Parliament on sealing

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Former Union Minister Vijay Goel on Wednesday demanded that a special session of Parliament be convened immediately to discuss the issue of sealing of commercial establishments in the Capital's residential areas so that the livelihood of lakhs of people in the city was saved.

Mr. Goel, who was arrested while protesting against sealing of shops at Shahdara, said the Union Government should not waste any more time and bring in an Ordinance that could then be ratified by Parliament during the special session. "It is unfortunate that despite the fact that lakhs were being uprooted and were losing their livelihood, the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre was mutely watching the entire situation unfold," he added.

He said though the Supreme Court had pronounced its order on February 2006, the Congress-led coalition at the Centre and the Delhi Government had failed to come to the rescue of the affected families.

He claimed that it was only after the BJP intensified its stir and mobilised the people, the Union Urban Development Ministry woke up from its slumber and started acting. However, due to lack of any strategy and planning they only confused the whole issue throwing the city into further turmoil, he added.

Mr. Goel said he would take up the matter of convening a special session of Parliament with the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L. K. Advani.

Mr. Goel said the suggestion of seeking another six months' time and delaying the notification of the Master Plan for Delhi by the Union Urban Development Ministry was another effort to hoodwink the people of Delhi. He also demanded that the Congress-led MCD be dissolved as it had failed to perform its functions and provide effective governance.
