NEW DELHI: The First Lady of Cyprus, Fotini Papadopoulou, on Wednesday visited the Thalassaemia Unit at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here and interacted with the affected children and their parents.

"India like Cyprus is a country affected by thalassaemia which if not addressed properly can amount to a major public health problem. Successful prevention, particularly in a country of this population size, is the most effective way of controlling this disease. The resulting saving of national resources can then be used towards providing proper clinical management and quality treatment to patients with this life-threatening disease," said Ms. Papadopoulou.

"Scientific literature has demonstrated beyond any doubt that appropriate clinical management increases significantly the chances for survival of patients, leading to near normal and productive life," she added.

Ms. Papadopoulou's visit coincides with the hospital's Founder's Day celebrations starting Thursday.
