NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over the bad public image of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, newly-elected Mayor Farhad Suri on Wednesday urged the Councillors of both the ruling Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party to pursue the politics of consensus and jointly work for the development of Delhi. "If the civic body has a bad reputation, it is not just the ruling Congress but also the opposition BJP that is also equally responsible for it. All Councillors should have a sense of pride in them about the civic body, then only they will be able to work with more commitment and seriousness," said Mr. Suri while addressing the MCD House after taking over as the new Mayor. Mr. Suri, a suave politician who is known for his no-nonsense image in the Town Hall, said Delhi these days was facing serious problems while referring to the ongoing demolition and sealing drives. "We cannot make people jobless and homeless. All political parties need to work together to resolve the matter. We will soon find a solution to this," he said, welcoming the Centre's move seeking six-month relaxation from sealing and demolition exercises from the Supreme Court. Assuring opposition Councillors that any constructive steps for development and progress of the Capital would be welcomed, Mr. Suri said good suggestions were always welcome. Asking Councillors to cooperate in the civic body's functioning cutting across party lines, Mr. Suri said providing a transparent and efficient administration would be his top priority. Warning officers that no laxity would be tolerated in their work, particularly those were of routine nature, the Mayor said all MCD officers should know their responsibilities and should work to make a Delhi better place with good civic amenities. Stressing on the MCD taking austerity measures, he asked Councillors and officers to suggest innovative ways to add more revenue for better functioning of the civic body.
