Three killed, 24 injured in collision

Thiruvananthapuram: Three persons, including a 14-year-old girl, were killed and 24 others were injured in a multiple collision involving a tipper lorry and two tempo vans near Thonnakkal on the National Highway 47 on Wednesday evening.

The deceased were identified as Vijitha, 14, daughter of Viswambharan, of Azhoor, Chirayinkeezh, Ragini, 44, wife of Vidyadharan, of Azhoor, and Lily, 41, also of Azhoor. The injured are being treated at Medical College Hospital (MCH) and at a private hospital at Kazhakuttam.

Of the injured, three children, Varsha, 7, Punya, 5, and Pooja, 4, have been admitted to SAT Hospital.

According to the Mangalapuram police, the accident occurred around 4-45 p.m. when the tipper lorry was on its way from Mangalapuram towards Attingal. The lorry suddenly swerved to the right without giving any signal to enter a petrol pump. It collided with a tempo van that was coming from Chirayinkeezh to Kattayikonam.

In the process, another tempo that was on its way from Mangalapuram towards Attingal also collided with the tipper lorry.

The driver of the tipper lorry fled from the scene. The Mangalapuram police have registered a case. The bodies have been shifted to the mortuary of MCH.
