Candidates call for development of city

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A time-bound package for the development of the city, including the need to set up a High Court Bench, was stressed by the candidates of Thiruvananthapuram West, North and East, who took part in a `meet-the-candidates' programme, organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association, in the city on Wednesday.

Surendran Pillai, the LDF candidate in the West constituency, highlighted the lack of adequate drinking water and the polluted Parvathi Puthanar as some of the major issues plaguing his constituency. "All the waste generated in the city is getting dumped in the Parvathi Puthanar. This has adversely affected the lives of people living along its banks," he said. The development of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was another area touched upon by him.

Shobhana George, the UDF candidate in the West constituency, assured the Bar Association members that she would make every effort to set up a High Court Bench in the city. Some of the other promises given by her included reviving the Parvathi Puthanar, and the need to improve the potential of Veli and Shanghumughom as tourist destinations.

The BJP candidate in the North constituency, Jayalekshmi, said both the LDF and UDF lacked the political will to set up the High Court Bench in the city. "The High Court Bench has never been a priority issue for the members of both the fronts," she alleged.

The former Speaker and LDF candidate in the North constituency M. Vijayakumar said the setting up of the High Court Bench would be one of foremost priorities of his party if voted to power.

The freewheeling session was also attended by Hindu Aikya Vedi president Jyotheendra Kumar and the former Mayor V. Sivankutty, both candidates in the Thiruvananthapuram East constituency, and AIADMK candidate M.D Williams.
