This Day That Age
Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi and Mr. Palghat Mani Aiyar, recipients of this year's Presidential award for Carnatic music, were felicitated at a largely attended public meeting in New Delhi on April 13. The function, arranged by the Dakshin Bharat Samaj and attended by a number of musicians, also coincided with the Tamil New Year Day celebrations in the capital. Silver plaques and calligraphed addresses in Tamil were presented by the Samaj to the two artistes. The address to Mr. Palghat Mani Aiyar described him as "Abhinavanandi" and the "uncrowned king of mridangam" and referred to his great genius as an accompanist and soloist. The address to Smt. M.S. Subbulakshmi said that her art had captured the imagination of people throughout the length and breadth of India and that her admirers had included Mahatma Gandhi and Sarojini Naidu. There being no issue of the paper dated April 14, 1956.
