PONDICHERRY: A large number of DMK men from the Mannadipet constituency hit the streets on Thursday in protest against the party's decision to reallocate the seat to Congress for the Assembly polls. On Wednesday, the Congress and DMK decided to swap the seats and the constituency went to the Congress and the latter was given the Embalam reserved constituency. Angry supporters of A. K. Kumar, who was earlier announced as DMK candidate for Mannadipet, sat on a two-hour dharna at Tirukanur junction. School students were put to hardship due to the protest. The supporters blocked the Mannadipet-Tirukanur road by cutting down trees at several points.
Trees felled
Police said seven trees were cut at several places and traffic along the Mannadipet- Tirukannur route had to be diverted. Many students had to walk several kilometers to reach the school because of the traffic diversion. One case was registered for holding a dharna and another for cutting down trees, according to the police. Party functionaries overpowered a supporter who tired to set himself ablaze, the police said. A. K. Kumar said his supporters were taken by surprise because they have almost completed the first round of campaigning.
