News Analysis
In the detailed report on The Hindu-CNN-IBN poll in Kerala ("As always, the floating voters hold the key", April 13, 2006), the bar chart relating to the popularity rating of Kerala leaders has errors in two figures. A.K. Antony's percentage share of those polled is 7 (not 25 as published) and Pinarayi Vijayan's is 3 (not 7). The total does not add up to 100 as 17 per cent of the respondents did not mention names and others mentioned names not included in the chart. "Few film fans in the history of cinema in the country and even elsewhere can be said to have cast a spell on at least two generations of film-goers as he did," was the sentence in "Rajkumar, doyen of Kannada cinema, passes away" (April 13, 2006, page 1). "Few film fans ... " must be "Few filmstars .... " Jihand-e-Akbar" in "Musharraf urges Muslims to move on path of development" (April 12, 2006) is incorrect. It is "Jihad-e-Akbar", which means "Fighting the desires in you". Also, in the same issue in "55 killed in Karachi park blast" (International page), the reference to "Id Milan" in the blurb and the text is wrong. It is "Id-e-Milad-un-Nabi", which means the birth celebrations of Prophet Muhammed. "Robin to work closely with Chappell", says V.R.V. Singh will be with the India "A" team travelling to Abu Dhabi, while "Dhoni, Agarkar rested for last ODI" (both "Sport", April 13, 2006) says Singh will not be travelling to Abu Dhabi. A reader refers to the contradiction. There are two different tournaments and teams V.R.V. Singh is in the India "A" team led by Venugopala Rao for the EurAsia Cup between April 22 and May 5 in Abu Dhabi, but not in the national team led by Rahul Dravid that will play two ODIs against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi on April 18 and 19. On the report "Best ODI Streaks (Country-wise)", (Sport, April 7, 2006) a reader says the winning streak for South Africa was 20, and not 12 as stated. South Africa's streak of matches without a defeat indeed is 20. But in that sequence, a game against New Zealand (fourth ODI at Durban, November 4, 2005) was abandoned and hence qualifies as a "No Result". The winning streak is therefore 12. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
