Procession taken out in Bellary; shops, cinemas down shutters

BELLARY: A bandh was observed in Bellary as a mark of respect to the late actor Rajkumar.

The voluntary bandh, barring a stray incident of stone-throwing near the Gadagi Chennappa Circle in the city in which a bus and a lorry was damaged, passed off peacefully.

Activists of various organisations took out a procession in the city carrying portraits/photographs of Dr Rajkumar.

The city wore a deserted look as almost all shops and business establishments, cinemas, hotels and restaurants downed their shutters.

Some Kannada activists forced some of the shops to close for the day.

People, including women and children, and students of degree colleges, who had to attend the examination, were greatly inconvenienced as the public transport system, including the Karnataka State Road Transport buses and autorickshaws went off the road.

Passengers who had come from other places and degree college students had no alternative but to walk back home.

All banks, government offices, semi and quasi government offices remained closed in view of the holiday declared to mourn the death of the thespian.

Processions

According to reports reaching the district headquarters, processions were taken out in different parts of the district including Hospet, Sirguppa, Hagari Bommanahalli and Hadagali, to mourn the death of Rajkumar.

People voluntarily closed their shops and business establishments for the day in these places.
