State urged to bail out ryots with loan waiver

Staff Reporter

Thirty-hour protest by Rythu Sangham ends

  • State urged to implement recommendations of M. S. Swaminathan
  • Government urged to fix capacitors and foot valves
  • It will only require Rs. 112 crores, opines CPI leader

ANANTAPUR: The State Government has failed to rescue the farming community, who have been suffering reverses for the past several years, K. Nageswara Rao, national vice-president of All India Kisan Sabha, has alleged.

The All India Kisan Sabha is affiliated to the CPI.

Mr. Rao attributed the continuing spree of farmers' suicides to the failure of the Government in bailing them out.

Speaking at the end of the 30-hour protest staged by Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham (APRS) here on Thursday he said that he has expressed his dismay over the issue to the Congress leaders. When in Opposition, the Congress had joined chorus with the Left parties in demanding several measures to bail out farmers. But, after assuming power they are of the view that their responsibility is over by taking up irrigation projects and with the introduction of the free power scheme, he alleged

Every three years, farmers of Anantapur were getting one good crop and even that is not helpful to them due to the lack of remunerative price to the produce. The Government is deceiving the ryots, Mr. Rao alleged. As the ryots had suffered heavy groundnut crop losses during the last kharif, they should be paid input subsidy immediately, he opined.

    Pothireddypadu

On the Pothireddypadu head regulator, he said that taking the interests of Rayalaseema farmers into consideration, the CPI had supported widening and increasing the capacity.

He also urged the Government to implement the recommendations of M.S. Swaminathan and waive loans up to Rs. 50,000. Waiving of loans in the State will cost the exchequer Rs. 2,000 crores as against the Rs. 3 lakh crores due to the banks by industrialists and politicians, he alleged.

District secretary of CPI M.V. Ramana,

State president of APRS K. Ramakrishna were also present.
