Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide

Sangareddy: Unable to repay loans availed to sink 11 borewells, a farmer committed suicide in Ramojipalli village of Pedasankarmpet mandal. The body of Appuri Satheyya, 42, was found in the agricultural lands of one Hanumanthi Ellayya on Thursday. Failure of groundnut crop allegedly due to erratic power supply added to his misery. - Staff Reporter

Farmer electrocuted

Sangareddy: Mettala Narsimhulu, 45, a resident of Padalpalli of Toopran mandal, who suffered burns while trying to meddle with a transformer died in Gandhi Hospital on Thursday. Narsimhulu was trying to rectify the Jumper wire of the transformer when he accidentally came in contact with a high-tension wire. - Staff Reporter

Fake currency racket busted

KARIMNAGAR: The police busted a fake currency racket on Wednesday and arrested three persons from Durgammagadda area.

Karimnagar DSP Y. Sai Narsa Reddy told newsmen on Thursday that the arrested persons were M. Srinivas, 24, B. Purushotham, 48, and M. Srinivas, 29. - Staff Reporter

Three drowned in tank

KADAPA: Three girls - Maddineni Vasundhara, 15, Mahimaluri Himabindu, 15, and Mahimaluri Sumathi, 14, belonging to Bestapalle village in Obulavaripalle mandal were drowned in Pedda Orampadu tank in the mandal. They attempted to swim after washing clothes in the tank, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

Lifer for brothers in murder case

KADAPA: Principal District and Sessions Judge M. Vijayalakshmi on Thursday sentenced two brothers - Vennapusa Nadipi Chenna Reddy, 38, and Vennapusa Chinna Chenna Reddy, 35, -- to life imprisonment for murdering Seelam Bali Reddy, 25, over a land dispute. - Staff Reporter

Award for scientist

HYDERABAD: Smt. Manthripragada Sita Devi-Sri Rama Rao Medal for 2006 from Indian Society of Applied Geochemists was bagged by V. Balaram, Scientist `F' at National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here for his contribution in Analytical Geochemistry from 1996 to 2006.

A press release said that Dr. Balaram received the award from B.R. Arora, Director, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, at a function in Dehradun recently.

Two constables suspended

ELURU: Superintendent of Police M. Jaganmohan Reddy on Thursday suspended two constables on charges of graft and outraging the modesty of a girl.

K. Phalguna allegedly outraged the modesty of a girl with a false promise to marry her during his stint as constable in Tadepalligudem.

A. Ratna Raju, attached to Bhimadole police, allegedly demanded Rs. 400 from some persons injured in a road accident for shifting them to Government hospital in Eluru. - Staff Reporter

Seed official trapped

HYDERABAD: ACB officials on Thursday booked a case against Assistant Director of AP Seeds Certification Agency P. Ravindra for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his income. ACB Joint Director T. Yoganand said that Ravindra owned assets worth over Rs. 40 lakhs.

Isolated rain in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The cyclonic upper air circulation continued over Telangana for the third day on Thursday, causing isolated rain in the region.

Weather, however, was dry in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Hakimpet and Hyderabad airports recorded a rainfall of 5 cm and 3 cm respectively.

Kadapa recorded the State's highest day temperature of 42 degree Celsius.

Forecast for Friday: Isolated rain likely in Telangana and Rayalaseema. - Special Correspondent

Cop dies in road accident

KADAPA: An Armed Reserve constable, Rajesh, 28, died instantly and another AR constable M. Nagendra Prasad, 25, was critically injured when their two-wheeler rammed into a stationary lorry near Bhakrapet in Siddhavatam mandal on Wednesday midnight. They were returning from Vontimitta to Kadapa when the accident took place. — Staff Reporter

YSR public meeting venue inspected

KURNOOL: Collector Vikas Raj and SP B. Malla Reddy on Thursday visited the venue of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy's Praja Patham meeting on April 20 at Atmakur. MLA Erasu Pratap Reddy also accompanied them. The Chief Minister will take part in Praja Patham at Nallakalva near Atmakur and address a gram sabha. Addressing a meeting, the Collector said a comprehensive drainage system for the town would be proposed.

Tributes paid to Sripada Rao

KARIMNAGAR: Rich tributes were paid to former Assembly Speaker D. Sripada Rao on his seventh death anniversary on Thursday in Karimnagar district.

Several programmes recollecting his services for the poor and the downtrodden were held. In Karimnagar town, the District Congress Committee conducted a poor feeding programme at the Collectorate crossroads.- Staff Reporter

70 chikun gunya cases reported

NIZAMABAD: About 70 cases of chikun gunya were reported from Kodicharla village of Madnur mandal, according to information reaching here. However, the district administration put the figure at 40. District Medical and Health Officer P. Kodandapani and the revenue staff were rushed to the village to supervise the medical services.
